Properly deflating and storing your drop stitch kayak ensures it remains in top condition for your next adventure. Drop stitch kayaks, known for their high-pressure rigidity and hardshell-like performance, require careful handling to maintain their durability and portability. Follow this step-by-step guide to deflate and store your kayak efficiently.

1. Remove Accessories and Place the Kayak on Its Side

Begin by dismantling the paddle and removing all accessories, such as seats, footrests, and fins, from the kayak. Rinse all components with fresh water, especially metal parts, to prevent corrosion from saltwater exposure. Lay the inflatable kayak on its side to prepare for deflation. This position makes it easier to access the valves and start the folding process.

2. Open Each Valve and Let the Kayak Flatten

Locate the valves on the canoe’s side chambers and floor. To deflate, push down the spring-loaded pin on each valve to release the air. Allow the portable kayak to flatten naturally as the high-pressure air escapes. Ensure all valves are fully open to avoid trapped air, which can make folding more difficult.

3. Make the First Fold Just After the Finbox

Once the kayak is fully deflated, identify the finbox area (typically near the stern). Make the first fold just beyond the finbox, ensuring the fold is neat and aligns with the kayak’s natural shape. This fold sets the foundation for compact storage.

4. Make Another Fold the Same Size as the First One

Create a second fold parallel to the first, maintaining the same width. Consistency in fold size ensures the kayak remains compact and fits easily into its storage bag. Press down gently to expel any remaining air.

5. Make a Small Fold to Tuck in the Other Nose Cone

Locate the nose cone at the opposite end of the kayak (typically the bow). Make a small fold to tuck the nose cone inward, aligning it with the rest of the folded kayak. This step prevents the cone from protruding and ensures a tidy package.

6. Fold This Section on Top of the Rest of the Kayak

Take the folded nose cone section and fold it over the previously folded sections. This stacks the kayak into a compact, layered bundle, making it easier to secure and store.

7. Secure with the Kayak Strap

Use the provided kayak strap (or a compatible one) to wrap around the folded kayak. Position the strap centrally to hold the folds together securely. This prevents the sea kayak from unfolding during transport or storage.

8. Tighten the Strap to Secure the Kayak

Pull the strap tight to compress the boat further, ensuring it remains compact. Double-check that the strap is evenly distributed to avoid stressing any single area of the kayak.

9. Place the Kayak in the Bag with All Accessories

Place the folded kayak into its carry bag, along with the cleaned and dried accessories (paddle, seat, pump, etc.). Ensure everything fits snugly to avoid movement during transport. Your kayak is now ready for storage or your next paddling adventure!

Drop stitch kayaks are designed for portability and durability, but improper deflation or storage can lead to creases, material stress, or valve damage. By following these steps, you ensure your kayak remains compact, protected, and ready for countless adventures on the water.
